Robbing the Bees: A Biography of Honey by Holley Bishop

If you’re a history buff this book is for you!  Bishop discusses the science and history of honey and the roles of bees in both nature and civilization, while sprinkling in anecdotes about her own introduction to beekeeping.  This book is a big favorite of our Mead Maker Diane… she loved the parts about women’s roles as the primary brewers and household beekeepers in history.

The History of the World in 6 Glasses by Tom Standage

Did you ever think a drink could affect the course of history?  Standage argues that six drinks – beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea and cola – have influenced humankind during several important periods in history, acting as a catalyst for advancing culture. You won’t look at these beverages the same way again after reading it.

The Drunken Botanist by Amy Stewart

If you don’t have a copy of The Drunken Botanist already, you need to go get one!  Not only does it have over 50 drink recipes, but it details all the herbs, flowers, fruits and so on that humans attempted to transform into alcohol over the years.  Needless to say, we have gotten several unique ideas for mead recipes from this book. Expect to see some juniper and spruce tips popping up in a future mead.

The Herbal Apothecary by JJ Pursell

This holistic guide offers an introduction to the use of various plants and herbs for health and healing.  Did you know hops could help relieve tension?  Or that local honey can help relieve allergies? Botanical inspirations abound in this book.

The Homebrewer’s Almanac by Marika Josephson, Aaron Kleidon and Ryan Tockstein

Calling all homebrewers, gardeners and foragers!  This is a unique guide to brewing focusing on foraging for local, seasonal ingredients year-round.  Lots of unique recipes, and suggestions for incorporating bark, twigs and sticks, for example. Such an inspiration for the use of what’s available in creative ways. And the recipes are to die for!

The Art of Mead Tasting & Food Pairing by Chrissie Manion Zaerpoor

Ever wonder where we get all those delicious food pairing ideas on your tasting notes at Honeygirl?  Not only do we use it in the meadery, but we have a copy at home on our kitchen shelf.  For diehard mead drinkers or those new to this tasty beverage, this book is the complete guide to drinking and pairing mead. Come by to peruse our copy in the meadery, and up your game when it comes to mead and cheese pairing, mead cocktails, or pairing mead with any cuisine.
