Eno River State Park
The Eno River is the perfect easy-going scenic hiking spot. With trails right along the river you get a both a beautiful view and glimpses of NC wildlife (yay turtles!). Head over to the West Point on the Eno Park for a variety of shorter trail loops and access to canoe or kayak docks. Or try the Hillsborough Riverwalk, just a short drive from Durham, for a paved trail in a more urban setting.
Duke Gardens makes the perfect spot for a picnic! Wander around the extensive gardens and take in the scenery before you find the perfect shady spot to have lunch. Some of our favorite spots: the H.L. Blomquist Garden of Native Plants and the Butterfly Garden!
The Tobacco Trail is a 22+ mile trail system weaving through Durham and Chatham County. The entire trail is paved, so it’s the best spot for an easy bike ride. Check out the trail heads in the Southpoint area, or meander right through downtown Durham.
Just a short drive from Durham, Jordan Lake is a great spot to camp! There are three main campsites that all have facilities, hiking trails and lake access. Rent a boat and spend your day on the water!
Falls Lake makes a great spot to picnic and swim. Sandling Beach, Rolling View and Beaverdam provide sandy swim beaches with nearby facilities. Perfect spot to cool off during our hot summer months!
William B Umstead State Park
William B Umstead State Park offers a good mix of shorter to longer trails. They also host several ranger guided hikes throughout the year, to make sure you see some of the most picturesque areas of the park.
Duke Forest includes over 7,000 acres of woodland and open fields and is managed by Duke University for the purpose of research and teaching. Just west of downtown Durham, there are several trailheads along NC-751 and Erwin Road.
North Carolina Museum of Art
Pop over to Raleigh for the day and check out the NC Museum of Art. Their trails weave through a variety of sculptures and art installations. Entrance to the grounds and their main exhibits are free!
Keith Arboretum and Forest
The Keith Arboretum is a nature lover’s dream! It is home to over 4,000 different plant species and a historic homestead (available to rent on Airbnb!). It’s the perfect spot for your next event.
Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden
If you are looking for a fun day trip outside of the Triangle area, check out the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden located just outside of Charlotte. The grounds are beautiful and you can grab a bottle of your favorite Honeygirl Mead at the gift shop!
